Hommage à Emmett Williams
4 little people, 2010
aluminium sheet 6 mm, lacquered, silhouettes approx. 1,70 x 1,00 m
In 2010, three years after the death of Emmet Williams, his "little people" were installed on the facade of museum FLUXUS+ in Potsdam. For the planning and installation his widow Ann Noël was consulted. During his lifetime Emmet Williams supported the idea that his "little people" should come to Potsdam and bring Fluxus further into the world. The „Hommage à Emmett Williams“was unveiled on 25 June 2010 in the context of the vernissage "IN AND OUT THE WINDOW“ with Alison Knowles and Ann Noël at museum FLUXUS+. The "little men" of Fluxus-artist Emmet Williams have been greeting visitors of the Schiffbauergasse passing the museum on the side facing the river Havel ever since.
They have danced their permutational dance on a mountaintop in Japan, on solid wooden wheels carved by native craftsmen in Kenya, at a Fluxus-Festival in Korea, on real stained glass in Verona, in a variety of prints and paintings, and here they are in the black marble hall of the former Imperial Castle in Poznan. Keep going, little fellows, and who knows where you'll end up. In a real cathedral, maybe, some day."
(From a boxed suite of 21 silkscreen prints, published by Edizione Francesco Conz of Verona in 1991, containing proposals for stained-glass windows of a Fluxus Cathedral.)
